Today’s video is a recording of Bobby Goldsboro performing his pop hit from 1974, called “Hello, Summertime.” Happy Summer from Jankenpon!
Birds and bees and all the flowers and trees, fishes on the line Girls and guys and yellow butterflies singing hello summertime
A homemade boat and a river to float nothing on our mind
Summer moon above two people in love singing hello summertime
Summertime laying back in the sun, yes summertime having summertime fun It’s a time for two just me and you and the summertime
Swing from a limb drop in for a swim, hey the water sure looks fine
Ain’t nothing wrong just floating along singing hello summertime
Summertime grins, lots of good friends we’re all feeling fine
Watch the sun go down, hear the summer sounds singing hello summertime
Summertime laying back in the sun, yes summertime having summertime fun
It’s a time for two just me and you and the summertime
Age is opportunity no less,
Than youth itself, though in another dress,
And as the evening twilight fades away,
The sky is filled with stars, invisible by day.”

“O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea.”

May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. Celebrate!
May is Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month – a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants.

We grow great by dreams. All big men are dreamers. They see things in the soft haze of a spring day or in the red fire of a long winter’s evening. Some of us let these great dreams die, but others nourish and protect them; nurse them through bad days till they bring them to the sunshine and light which comes always to those who sincerely hope that their dreams will come true.”
“Always fall in with what you’re asked to accept. Take what is given, and make it over your way. My aim in life has always been to hold my own with whatever’s going. Not against: with.”

“There’s a wind behind evey one of us that take us through our lives
We never see it
We can’t command it
We don’t even know its purpose
I would have stayed among you longer
but that wind has taken me away
I will miss it here
And I will miss you
But I am content that the power that propels me
does so with superior knowledge as to what is for the best
and that is my faith.”
–Father Brendan Flynn (played by Philip Seymour Hoffman), in Doubt, 2008 (Written and Directed by John Patrick Shanley, based on his play), Miramax Films
“We cannot seek achievement for ourselves and forget about progress and prosperity for our community… Our ambitions must be broad enough to include the aspirations and needs of others, for their sakes and for our own.”

Today’s video is an appeal from the Humane Society of the United States to Sea World to consider releasing Tilikum, the 29-year old, 12,000-pound captive orca who caused the death of veteran Sea World animal trainer Dawn Brancheau on February 24, 2010. In the video, Naomi Rose, Senior Scientist for the Humane Society of the United States, recounts the story of Keiko, the orca who was made famous in the movie “Free Willy,” and released into the waters off Iceland in 1998, as an example that Sea World could consider.
Today’s video is a commercial for Lipton Ice Tea, featuring Australian actor and Tony-Award winner Hugh Jackman, who also serves as International Ambassador for Lipton.
“Nothing worth doing is completed in our lifetime,
Therefore, we are saved by hope.
Nothing true or beautiful or good makes complete sense in any immediate context of history;
Therefore, we are saved by faith.
Nothing we do, however virtuous, can be accomplished alone.
Therefore, we are saved by love.
No virtuous act is quite a virtuous from the standpoint of our friend or foe as from our own;
Therefore, we are saved by the final form of love which is forgiveness.”
– Reinhold Niehbur (1892-1971)

“May flowers always line your path and sunshine light your day. May songbirds serenade you every step along the way. May a rainbow run beside you in a sky that’s always blue. And may happiness fill your heart each day your whole life through.”
“Three passions have governed my life:
The longings for love, the search for knowledge,
And unbearable pity for the suffering of humankind.
Love brings ecstasy and relieves loneliness.
In the union of love I have seen
In a mystic miniature the prefiguring vision
Of the heavens that saints and poets have imagined.
With equal passion I have sought knowledge.
I have wished to understand the hearts of people.
I have wished to know why the stars shine.
Love and knowledge led upwards to the heavens,
But always pity brought me back to earth;
Cries of pain reverberated in my heart
Of children in famine, of victims tortured
And of old people left helpless.
I long to alleviate the evil, but I cannot,
And I too suffer.
This has been my life; I found it worth living.”
– Bertrand Russell (1872-1970)

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.”
