Today’s Quote

“There’s a wind behind evey one of us that take us through our lives
We never see it
We can’t command it
We don’t even know its purpose

I would have stayed among you longer
but that wind has taken me away

I will miss it here
And I will miss you
But I am content that the power that propels me
does so with superior knowledge as to what is for the best
and that is my faith.”

   –Father Brendan Flynn (played by Philip Seymour Hoffman), in Doubt, 2008 (Written and Directed by John Patrick Shanley, based on his play), Miramax Films

Today’s Quote

“We cannot seek achievement for ourselves and forget about progress and prosperity for our community… Our ambitions must be broad enough to include the aspirations and needs of others, for their sakes and for our own.”

Today’s Video

Today’s video is an appeal from the Humane Society of the United States to Sea World to consider releasing Tilikum, the 29-year old, 12,000-pound captive orca who caused the death of veteran Sea World animal trainer Dawn Brancheau on February 24, 2010. In the video, Naomi Rose, Senior Scientist for the Humane Society of the United States, recounts the story of Keiko, the orca who was made famous in the movie “Free Willy,” and released into the waters off Iceland in 1998, as an example that Sea World could consider.

Today’s Quote

“Nothing worth doing is completed in our lifetime,
Therefore, we are saved by hope.
Nothing true or beautiful or good makes complete sense in any immediate context of history;
Therefore, we are saved by faith.
Nothing we do, however virtuous, can be accomplished alone.
Therefore, we are saved by love.
No virtuous act is quite a virtuous from the standpoint of our friend or foe as from our own;
Therefore, we are saved by the final form of love which is forgiveness.”

Happy St. Patrick’s Day

Today’s Poem

“Three passions have governed my life:
The longings for love, the search for knowledge,
And unbearable pity for the suffering of humankind.

Love brings ecstasy and relieves loneliness.
In the union of love I have seen
In a mystic miniature the prefiguring vision
Of the heavens that saints and poets have imagined.

With equal passion I have sought knowledge.
I have wished to understand the hearts of people.
I have wished to know why the stars shine.

Love and knowledge led upwards to the heavens,
But always pity brought me back to earth;
Cries of pain reverberated in my heart
Of children in famine, of victims tortured
And of old people left helpless.
I long to alleviate the evil, but I cannot,
And I too suffer.

This has been my life; I found it worth living.”

Today’s Video

Today’s video is an outrageously fun music video, called Telephone, featuring Lady Gaga, the high priestess of dance music, and Beyonce.  The 9-minute video features more of Lady Gaga’s signature “over the top” costumes, as well as some very fine choreography.  Within one day of its posting on YouTube, the video has been viewed over 2 million times.  Enjoy!

Today’s Quote

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.”
