Today’s Quote

Another fresh New Year is here…
Another year to live.
To banish worry, doubt, and fear,
to love and laugh and give.

This bright New Year is given me
To live each day with zest…
To daily grow and try to be
My highest and my best.

I have the opportunity
One more to right some wrongs,
To pray for peace, to plant a tree,
And sing more joyful songs.

– William Arthur Ward (1921-1994)

Today’s Quote

“Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.”

Today’s Video

Today’s video is a live recording of “For Good,” performed by Kristin Chenoweth, written and composed by Stephen Schwartz, from the Tony-award winning Broadway musical “Wicked.” After making its debut in San Francisco in 2003, the show moved to Broadway, where it won three Tony awards and has since become the 18th longest-running show in Broadway history.

It well may be
That we will never meet again
In this lifetime
So let me say before we part
So much of me
Is made of what I learned from you
You’ll be with me
Like a handprint on my heart
And now whatever way our stories end
I know you have re-written mine
By being my friend…”

Today’s Quote

“Life moves on, whether we act as cowards or heroes. Life has no other discipline to impose, if we would but realize it, than to accept life unquestioningly. Everything we shut our eyes to, everything we run away from, everything we deny, denigrate or despise, serves to defeat us in the end. What seems nasty, painful, evil, can become a source of beauty, joy and strength, if faced with an open mind. Every moment is a golden one for him who has the vision to recognize it as such.”

I Have a Dream Today

The speech seems as relevant and important today as it did 37 years ago.

Today’s video is a recording of Bobby Goldsboro performing his pop hit from 1974, called “Hello, Summertime.”  Happy Summer from Jankenpon!

Birds and bees and all the flowers and trees, fishes on the line
Girls and guys and yellow butterflies singing hello summertime
A homemade boat and a river to float nothing on our mind
Summer moon above two people in love singing hello summertime

Summertime laying back in the sun, yes summertime having summertime fun
It’s a time for two just me and you and the summertime
Swing from a limb drop in for a swim, hey the water sure looks fine
Ain’t nothing wrong just floating along singing hello summertime

Summertime grins, lots of good friends we’re all feeling fine
Watch the sun go down, hear the summer sounds singing hello summertime
Summertime laying back in the sun, yes summertime having summertime fun
It’s a time for two just me and you and the summertime
